New work: FLEUR NOIR - nine black and white botanical fine art prints

Press Release - February 2020

A sense of theatre, drama and a haunting beauty are woven throughout the nine black and white botanical studies released today by award-winning fine-art photographer Paul Coghlin.

The title of the collection of limited edition fine art prints, Fleur Noir - suggesting “dark flower” - plays on the term Film Noir and is partly inspired by that classic genre of film where mystery is evoked using hard lighting, dark shadows and strong contrasts.

“For my latest botanical series, Fleur Noir, I’ve used the chiaroscuro lighting technique” says Paul. “It's Italian for “light-dark”, and is a method that has been used by artists for hundreds of years, suggesting drama and suspense. Each study needed a significant amount of patience and experimentation in almost total darkness to achieve the required result, and I wanted to create the effect of each flower having one by one, stepped out of the dark, murky shadows into a pool of light.”

A Fellow of the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP), Paul has won many awards, including twice winning the much-coveted BIPP Photographer of the Year. He has also won awards from New York's International Photography Awards (IPA) and the Federation of European Photographers. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition in London and with the Royal Horticultural Society.

The square art prints are limited to editions of 10 for each of the smaller sizes (15x15, 24x24, 30x30 inches) and just 7 for the two larger sizes (40x40 and 50x50 inches) and are available from Weston Gallery in Carmel, California, USA.
