Two Zinnia from colourful Chroma

This lovely flowers, 'Queen Red Lime' Zinnia, is from my colourful Chroma series and I particularly like the ‘vintage’ look of the flower. It was grown at our nearby flower farm here in Suffolk in both red and yellow.

Bees and butterflies love Zinnia, so I think we will be growing some of these ourselves next year. Our garden is already very bee-friendly, which is fine by me. The more the merrier (within reason….)

Zinnia Elegans is originally from South America and was introduced to Europe in the late 18th century. These self-seeding annuals are grown in a variety of colours and in floriography, (the language of flowers), they are said to represent the sentiment ‘thinking of absent friends’, which is rather nice

Another fun fact for you is that the Zinnia has also been into space! Scientists on the International Space Station have experimented on them to see if they can be grown in a weightless environment (the answer is yes they can), as they research suitable plants to grow as food for future space missions.

“Growing the zinnia plants will help advance our knowledge of how plants flower in the Veggie growth system, and will enable fruiting plants like tomatoes to be grown and eaten in space using Veggie as the in-orbit garden,” said Trent Smith, Veggie program manager at the NASA Kennedy Space Center.
